Do You Have To Be Fit To Be On Broadway?

I’m not going to lie, I have totally experienced body image issues. I remember when Broadway Bares started to become such a huge trend within the theatre community. Seeing all of these ripped bodies was intimidating.

In the age of Instagram, it’s hard not to “compare and despair” after seeing image after image of airbrushed, photoshopped people online. Fitness is a such a huge trend on social media, and most accounts are filled with toned abs and crazy flexible yoga poses. We can often be left feeling guilty about our own bodies even if we’re already in great shape.

At the same time, or maybe in response to the polished perfection of the fitness industry, body positivity has becoming a growing movement. There is even an awesome blog and Instagram account, Fit for Broadway, filled with holistic recipes, workout inspiration, and fun merchandise to help you reach your full potential in a healthy, positive way.

Learn to Bounce Back When You Drop The Ball

It’s been years since you’ve had that callback for that big casting director. They would think it’s so weird to just reach out to them out of the blue, right? They probably don’t even remember you! Man, you really dropped the ball. I guess you’re going to be working at this restaurant forever...

Raise your hand if your own inner gremlin has sounded something like this before? (raises hand too!) Look, dropped balls are a fact of life. It takes a lot of time and energy to keep up with everyone you can meet at auditions, in shows and during classes.

So, don’t beat yourself up if you’ve lost track of an important industry contact or peer. Instead, learn to pick that ball right up and throw it back on the court.

I'm on Broadway, Why Does It Suck?

We are told over and over that if you’re gonna complain about being on Broadway, then don’t do it. So you keep your mouth closed, swallow your pride, and collect your check, all in the name of humility.

You really are grateful, but it feels as if someone just told you Santa isn’t real. When dreams become commerce, the reality can be a tough pill to swallow. Sure, it’s exciting to get to perform at the Tony Awards or on the Today Show, The Tonight Show, The View, etc., but after the cameras are off, you may feel stuck in a contract for another 9 months unhappy.

I’m not going to judge you. I understand; you’re frustrated performing eight shows a week and spending your only day off recovering for the next round.
