How to Handle That One Person in the Cast


You just booked this great job! Congratulations! The material is outstanding. The creative team is on your target list. Everything seems perfect, and then you find out there’s one person in the cast that just gets under your skin!

It’s not a hard and fast rule, but typically there’s always one. Here are 4 suggestions to help you prevent negative cast interactions from taking even a bit of energy away from your creative enjoyment of the job.

  1. Introspection - According to famous German novelist Hermann Hesse, “If you hate a person, you hate something in him that is part of yourself. What isn't part of ourselves doesn't disturb us.” Whenever you're judgmental of others, you're, in fact, judging yourself. Take some time to journal, or meditate, what exactly is it about that person that gets under your skin, and then where do you see that in yourself currently or in your past.

  2. Forgiveness - Forgive that person for their behavior for they are doing the best they can with that they have in that moment. (Do this internally, of course; no need to say out loud.)

  3. Be Professional - Remember that you are there, first and foremost, to do your job. Would it be nice to make friends? Sure. But your priority is on the task at hand. Show up on time and ready to work. “Be the light in the room,” as Caesar Samayoa suggested.

  4. Ask For Help - If another cast member is acting inappropriately or making you uncomfortable, you have a stage manager, company manager, and/or a director to ask for support. What we do in this business is collaborative, and humans want to help other humans. Don’t be afraid to reach out.
